This is the story of Adam and Eve after they had gone out of paradise.

Adam said unto Eve:

β€œWhat shall we do, that we may not perish?”

β€œFor we have transgressed the commandment of God.”

πŸ“– CHAPTER 2

And Adam said:

β€œLet us do penance for forty days.”

And Eve said:

β€œI will do penance for thirty-four days.”

And they began their fasting.

And Adam stood in the river Jordan, and the water came up to his neck.

And he prayed unto the Lord continually.

And Eve stood in the river Tigris.

And she prayed likewise.

And Satan appeared unto Eve in the likeness of an angel.

And he said:

β€œGod hath heard thy prayer.”

And Eve believed him, and came out of the water.

And she went unto Adam.

And Adam said:

β€œWhy hast thou done this?”

β€œThou hast again been deceived.”

β€œO Lord, how long shall we be tried?”

And Adam rebuked him.

β€œThe Lord rebuke thee.”

And after these things Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bare a son.

And they called his name Cain.

And again she bare a son, and they called his name Abel.

And Adam taught his sons to offer sacrifice unto the Lord.

And Abel offered of the firstlings of his flock.

And Cain offered of the fruits of the earth.

And the Lord accepted the offering of Abel, but not that of Cain.

And Cain was angry and slew his brother.

And Adam and Eve mourned greatly.

And Adam said:

β€œNow I have lost my son through sin.”

And he wept bitterly.

And again Adam knew Eve, and she bare Seth.

And Adam rejoiced, saying:

β€œGod hath given me another seed.”

And the children grew, and Adam taught them righteousness.

And he instructed them in the fear of the Lord.

And after many years Adam became sick.

And he knew that his end was near.

And he called Seth and Eve and said:

β€œBehold, I am dying.”

β€œAnd I will tell you what shall come.”

And Adam said:

β€œWhen I was in paradise, I saw great glory.”

β€œAnd I heard the voice of God.”

β€œBut now I am cast out, and my strength faileth.”

And he told them of the fall.

And of the serpent.

And of the commandment that was broken.

And Adam said:

β€œTake heed, lest ye fall as we did.”

And Seth said:

β€œGo to the gate of paradise, and pray for mercy.”

And Seth and Eve went toward paradise.

And they wept and prayed.

And they saw an angel with a flaming sword.

And they trembled.

And they prayed unto the Lord.

And asked for oil of mercy.

And the angel said:

β€œYe cannot receive it now.”

β€œBut in the end, mercy shall be given.”

And they returned unto Adam.

And they told him all that had happened.

And Adam said unto them:

β€œBehold, I am about to depart from this world.”

β€œAnd my soul shall be taken from me.”

And he lay upon his bed.

And Eve wept, saying:

β€œO my lord, do not leave us.”

And Adam comforted her.

And he stretched out his hands and prayed unto the Lord.

And he said:

β€œReceive my spirit.”

And angels came, and they stood by Adam.

And they took his soul.

And the heavens opened, and there was great glory.

And the angels bore his soul upward.

And Eve saw this and fell upon the ground.

And she wept greatly.

And she said:

β€œO Lord, why hast Thou taken him from me?”

And the Lord sent comfort unto her.

And Eve also became sick.

And she knew that her time was near.

And she called her children and instructed them.

And she spoke of the fall.
