π CHAPTER 1
And it came to pass in those days that there arose a king who did not fear God, and he ruled with great arrogance over the people.
And he commanded all nations to forsake the law of the Most High and to serve idols of gold and silver.
And many among the people obeyed him, and they turned away from righteousness.
But there were some who remained steadfast in the fear of God, and they would not bow to the king nor to his commands.
And they were persecuted for the sake of righteousness, and many were slain.
π CHAPTER 2
And there arose among them a righteous man who rebuked the king and said:
βO king, thou hast exalted thyself above measure, but thou shalt be brought low because of thy pride.β
βFor the Lord sees all things, and He judges the hearts of men.β
And the king was enraged and commanded that the righteous man be put to death.
But his words remained among the people, and they strengthened those who feared God.
π CHAPTER 3
And there were those who gathered together in secret and encouraged one another in righteousness.
And they said:
βIt is better for us to suffer for truth than to live in
wickedness.β
And they refused the kingβs command, and they would not offer sacrifices to idols.
And the Lord looked upon them with favor, and He strengthened their hearts.
π CHAPTER 4
And the king sent forth his servants throughout all the land to compel the people to obey his decree.
And they seized many who would not submit, and they tortured them and cast them into prison.
And some were put to death, and others fled into the wilderness to escape the wrath of the king.
And those who fled dwelt in caves and in desolate places, and they lived in hardship and hunger, but they did not forsake the law of God.
π CHAPTER 5
And among those who fled there arose leaders who instructed the people and taught them the commandments of the Lord.
And they strengthened the weak and encouraged the fearful, saying:
βBe steadfast in righteousness, for the Lord will not forget His people.β
βAnd though we suffer now, the Lord will deliver us and bring judgment upon the wicked.β
π CHAPTER 6
And it came to pass that the king increased in his arrogance and sent forth greater punishments upon the people.
And he commanded that all who would not obey his decree should be slain without mercy.
And many were brought before him, and he demanded that they bow before idols and renounce the law of the Most High.
But they answered him boldly, saying:
βWe will not forsake the law of our God, nor will we bow before
idols.β
And the king was filled with wrath, and he commanded that they be put to death.
π CHAPTER 7
And there arose among the people a man of great wisdom who spoke to those who were fearful.
And he said:
βDo not fear the king nor his power, for his power is temporary, but the
judgment of the Lord is eternal.β
βAnd those who remain faithful shall receive life, but those who turn aside shall perish.β
And the people were strengthened by his words and remained steadfast in righteousness.
π CHAPTER 8
And the king gathered his armies and sent them forth to destroy those who had fled into the wilderness.
And they pursued them into the mountains and into the caves.
And many were captured, and some were slain, but others escaped and continued to hide.
And those who escaped gave thanks unto the Lord, who had delivered them from the hand of their enemies.
π CHAPTER 9
And the wicked among the people rejoiced in the suffering of the righteous, and they mocked them, saying:
βWhere is your God now? Let Him deliver you if He is able.β
But the righteous answered them not, and they endured their suffering with patience.
And the Lord saw their endurance and recorded their deeds.
π CHAPTER 10
And there came a time when the king himself was struck with illness, and his strength began to fail.
And he was troubled in his mind, and he remembered the words that had been spoken against him.
And he said:
βI have sinned in exalting myself above measure, and I have brought
destruction upon the innocent.β
But his repentance was not accepted, for his deeds were many and grievous.
And he died in great suffering, and his kingdom was taken from him.
π CHAPTER 11
And after the death of that king, there arose another who took his place.
And he was like unto the former, walking in arrogance and wickedness, and he hardened his heart against the law of the Most High.
And he renewed the decrees of his predecessor and strengthened them, commanding that all should worship idols and abandon righteousness.
And the people were again tested, and many were led astray.
π CHAPTER 12
And there arose a righteous teacher among the people who gathered those who feared God.
And he taught them the law and reminded them of the deeds of their fathers, and of the covenant which God had made with them.
And he said:
βRemember the Lord your God, and do not forget His commandments.β
βFor though the wicked prosper for a time, their end shall be destruction.β
π CHAPTER 13
And many turned from their evil ways and returned to righteousness.
And they strengthened one another and walked in the commandments of the Lord.
And the Lord looked upon them and was pleased with their repentance.
π CHAPTER 14
But there were others who hardened their hearts and would not repent.
And they joined themselves to the king and aided him in his wickedness.
And they persecuted the righteous and sought to destroy them.
And their sin increased, and they became exceedingly corrupt.
π CHAPTER 15
And the Lord sent warnings through His servants, calling the people to repentance.
But the wicked refused to listen, and they mocked the messengers of God.
And because of this, judgment was prepared against them.
And the righteous continued to endure, trusting in the Lord.
π CHAPTER 16
And it came to pass that the wicked multiplied their deeds, and their oppression increased upon the earth.
And they set traps for the righteous and sought to destroy them utterly.
And the righteous cried out unto the Lord, saying:
βO Lord, behold our affliction and judge between us and our
enemies.β
And the Lord heard their cry and prepared judgment against the wicked.
π CHAPTER 17
And there arose among the rulers a division, and they contended one against another.
And their kingdoms were troubled, and there was no peace among them.
And their strength was weakened, and their power diminished.
And the Lord caused confusion to come upon them because of their wickedness.
π CHAPTER 18
And the righteous were delivered from many dangers, and they gave thanks unto the Lord.
And they said:
βThe Lord is our refuge and our strength; He has not forsaken us.β
And they continued in righteousness and walked in His commandments.
π CHAPTER 19
But the wicked continued in their ways, and they did not turn aside from their evil deeds.
And they rejoiced in their power and trusted in their strength.
But their end was near, though they did not perceive it.
π CHAPTER 20
And judgment came upon them suddenly, and their cities were overthrown, and their power was broken.
And they were scattered and brought low, and their pride was humbled.
And all who saw it said:
βSurely the Lord has judged them because of their wickedness.β
π CHAPTER 21
And after these things the righteous dwelt in peace, and the fear of the Lord was established among them.
And they taught their children the commandments of God and instructed them in righteousness.
And they remembered the afflictions that had come upon them and the deliverance which the Lord had wrought.
And they gave thanks continually.
π CHAPTER 22
And the people prospered for a time, and there was rest in the land.
But they did not forget the deeds of the wicked nor the judgments that had come upon them.
And they said one to another:
βLet us not turn aside from the path of righteousness, lest we fall as
they did.β
π CHAPTER 23
And there arose again among the people some who were careless and forgot the law.
And they began to follow after their own desires and turned aside from the commandments.
And their hearts became hardened, and they no longer feared the Lord.
π CHAPTER 24
And the elders rose up and rebuked them, saying:
βWhy do you turn away from righteousness after all that the Lord has
done for you?β
βHave you forgotten the destruction of the wicked and the mercy shown to the righteous?β
But some listened and repented, while others hardened their hearts still more.
π CHAPTER 25
And thus the book concludes with the teaching that the Lord judges all according to their deeds.
And those who remain steadfast in righteousness shall receive life, but those who turn aside shall perish.
And the fear of the Lord shall endure forever among the righteous, and their memory shall not be blotted out.

And he set himself against the law of the Most High, and he commanded that all the people should forsake the commandments and follow his ways.
And many among the people were deceived, and they turned aside from the truth and followed after wickedness.
But there were some who remained faithful, and they would not abandon the law of their God.
π CHAPTER 2
And there arose among the faithful a man of wisdom, who taught the people and strengthened their hearts.

away.β

And the king was enraged and commanded that he be put to death.

soul.β

And they did not turn aside from righteousness.
π CHAPTER 13
And the wicked increased in their deeds, and they oppressed the innocent.
And they trusted in their power and in their riches.
But their hearts were far from the Lord.
π CHAPTER 14
And the Lord brought confusion upon them, and their plans were turned against them.
And they fell into the pits which they had prepared for others.
And their wickedness returned upon their own heads.
π CHAPTER 15
